Moumena Alkasem’s story is one of resilience, courage, and dedication to education amidst the turmoil of the Syrian revolution. As an English teacher at the SETF’s Wisdom House in Idlib, Syria, she played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young children, many of whom were orphans affected by the war. Despite the constant threat of airstrikes and violence, Moumena, along with the other teachers at Wisdom House, remained committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for her students.
During the Syrian revolution, Moumena experienced firsthand the oppressive regime’s attempts to stifle freedom of expression and religious practices. She defied these constraints by becoming an advocate for change, joining the protests and demonstrations that called for an end to the dictatorship. Moumena’s personal experiences of religious restrictions and forced political affiliations fueled her determination to fight for a better future for herself and her students.
Moumena’s teaching career was born out of her passion for English and her desire to become a translator. Despite the challenging circumstances she faced during her university studies, she embraced the opportunity to teach young children English, utilizing her limited understanding of the language. Recognized for her exceptional teaching skills and dedication, she became an integral part of the Wisdom House, where she provided much-needed support and care to her students, many of whom struggled with the trauma of losing their families.
The Wisdom House, established by the Syrian Emergency Task Force and supported by the American people, became a beacon of hope for the children in Idlib. Despite the constant presence of war, bombings, and fear, Moumena and her fellow teachers created an environment where education thrived. She went above and beyond her role as a teacher, becoming a mother figure for her students, offering emotional support and guidance. Moumena’s commitment to her students’ well-being extended beyond the classroom, as she strived to create a sense of normalcy and happiness amidst the chaos.
