WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF) proudly announces a significant milestone achieved in collaboration with the Small School Support Project (SSSP): the delivery of 1,200 school bags to children in the Rukban IDP Camp on April 1st, 2024.

Providing school bags for the children of Rukban became increasingly imperative following multiple deliveries in the frame of SETF’s Operation Syrian Oasis to deliver humanitarian assistance to Rukban, including an average of seven school books per school-aged child. The absence of proper bags  caused discomfort and strain and resulted in students not attending classes as a result of the difficulties that the commute entailed.

During a visit to the Rukban IDP Camp last September, SETF’s Executive Director, Mouaz Moustafa, observed children attending school without proper bags, resorting to carrying their supplies in their bare hands, plastic bags or other items they could scarcely find in the camp. This observation underscored the urgent need for school bags, prompting SETF and SSSP to take action.

The comprehensive educational support provided since the launch of Operation Syrian Oasis, including school books, whiteboards, dry erase markers, and most recently school bags, along with improvements to school infrastructure and logistics, has been made possible through partnerships with SSSP and Global Justice. These efforts promote sustainable education in the Rukban IDP Camp, where access to education has been severely restricted for over nine years.

SETF is grateful to have partnered with SSSP, a non-profit organization based in Taiwan, to deliver the school bags in support of the education in Rukban IDP Camp. Encouraging further collaboration, SETF invites other organizations to join Operation Syrian Oasis in delivering aid to Rukban and improving the quality of life for its residents.
