The Syrian Emergency Task Force (SETF) strongly condemns the horrific terrorist attack that struck Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in the Dweila’a neighborhood of Damascus, killing over 22 worshippers and injuring dozens more during Sunday prayers. SETF extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expresses solidarity with the entire Syrian people.

This heinous act of terrorism, which mirrors the tactics long used by extremist groups like ISIS, is a direct assault not only on civilians and places of worship, but on Syria’s fragile journey toward peace and national recovery. At a time when Syria is finally emerging from the shadow of dictatorship and embracing a new era of hope, such acts of violence seek to derail progress and reignite division.

Attacks targeting faith communities are an affront to human dignity and a deliberate attempt to sow chaos and sectarian hatred. Syria’s centuries-old tradition of coexistence must not be shaken by the agendas of extremist actors who thrive on instability and fear.

SETF also commends the swift response of Syrian authorities in managing the crisis, launching investigations, and offering immediate support to survivors. These actions are vital in ensuring the protection of all religious sites and communities across Syria.

SETF calls for a full, impartial, and transparent investigation into the attack, and urge both local and international actors to intensify efforts in combating terrorism in all its forms. SETF also emphasizes the importance of international cooperation, particularly with the United States, to eliminate remaining ISIS threats and to strengthen Syria’s path toward justice and lasting stability.

Syria’s strength lies in the unity of its people. In honoring the victims of Mar Elias, we reaffirm our shared commitment to building a Syria that is inclusive, democratic, and rooted in justice for all.
