Mohammed Nasif Kheirbek was a powerful Syrian intelligence chief and longtime enforcer for both Hafez al-Assad and Bashar al-Assad. As one of the most trusted figures within Syria’s brutal security apparatus, he played a central role in establishing and maintaining the regime’s vast network of surveillance, repression, and political control.
For decades, Nasif was instrumental in orchestrating the detention, torture, and silencing of political dissidents, particularly during the early years of the Syrian uprising. While not directly linked to battlefield atrocities like mass killings or displacement, Nasif was instrumental in maintaining the oppressive security state that enabled such crimes. His influence helped shape the brutal response to dissent that escalated into war. He was nicknamed “the Godfather” of the Syrian-Iranian military alliance under the Assad regime. A key architect of the state’s intelligence and counterintelligence operations, he coordinated closely with Iranian and Hezbollah officials to maintain regime stability and suppress opposition movements.
