Profile

Major General Suhail al-Hassan, often referred to by his nickname “The Tiger”, emerged as one of the most prominent battlefield commanders of the Assad regime during the Syrian War. As leader of the Tiger Forces, a special operations division within the Syrian Army, al-Hassan gained notoriety for his role in retaking rebel-held areas through brutal tactics, including scorched-earth assaults, aerial bombardments, and starvation sieges.

Regarded as fiercely loyal to Bashar al-Assad, al-Hassan often bypassed traditional military hierarchies, reporting directly to the presidency and receiving direct backing from Russia. His operations in Aleppo, Hama, Idlib, and Eastern Ghouta were widely condemned by human rights groups for the indiscriminate killing of civilians and targeting of hospitals, markets, and schools.

Al-Hassan was also instrumental in coordinating battlefield strategy with Russian forces and Iranian-led militias, serving as a key military bridge between the Assad regime and its foreign allies. His reputation as a ruthless yet effective commander earned him admiration within pro-regime circles, but also placed him on international sanctions lists due to his involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Despite speculation at various points about a potential rivalry with other military leaders or even with Assad himself, Suhail al-Hassan has remained a symbol of the regime’s militarized survival. His legacy is inseparable from the devastation wrought by the war and the brutal methods used to maintain Assad’s rule.
