A Dentist’s Journey: Witnessing Resilience in Al-Rukban Refugee Camp

This is Dr. M. E., a dentist from Aleppo, Syria.

As a dentist, I have always understood the importance of oral health. But it was not until I visited Al-Rukban refugee camp that I truly grasped the devastating impact of conflict on basic human needs.

Stepping into the camp was like entering another world. The stark contrast between the comfort and safety I had known and the harsh reality faced by these displaced persons was overwhelming. The children, with their wide, innocent eyes, were especially heartbreaking. Many had never seen a dentist, and their teeth were in dire condition. Due to the long period of siege and the lack of medical care, many people’s teeth were completely destroyed.

Despite the unimaginable circumstances, the resilience of the refugees was inspiring. Their determination to rebuild their lives, often with limited resources, was a testament to the human spirit. It was astonishing to see how accustomed they had becometopain, to the point that they often did not complain.

Their generosity was equally striking. Even though the siege and the recent tightening of the smuggling routes had left them with little to give, they were always willing to share what they had. Their hospitality and kindness were a constant reminder of the enduring human spirit.

As I witnessed the suffering and resilience of these refugees, I could not help but think of the camp as a living grave. The conditions were so dire, and the hope for a better future seemed so distant. It was a place where people endured unimaginable hardships, yet still found ways to persevere.

Thanks to the Syrian Emergency Task Force and the US Military we were able to gain access to Al-Rukban camp. Providing dental care in the camp was a deeply rewarding experience. While I could not solve all their problems, I could offer some relief and hope. Each smile I saw, each tooth I saved, felt like a small victory against the despair that surrounded us.

Leaving Al-Rukban was one of the hardest things I have ever done. Overwhelmed with sadness and pain, I could no’t hold back the tears. The images and stories I witnessed will stay with me forever. It is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of compassion.

This experience has been the most significant and impactful of my life. It has forever changed me. It has reaffirmed my belief in the power of humanity to overcome adversity and has inspired me to continue working towards a world where everyone has access to essential healthcare.
