I'm a volunteer with March For Our Lives and writing to strongly urge you to support the Counseling Not Criminalization Act (S.2125 and  H.R.4011).

The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act seeks to decrease the presence of the school-to-prison pipeline by shifting how the federal government invests in school safety. This legislation would invest in counselors, social workers, nurses, and other health professionals. The response to school shootings and gun violence in schools has too often relied on ineffective interventions that result in trauma and incarceration. These strategies do not prevent violence, but rather shift who is perpetrating it. Strategies such as metal detectors in schools and funding for school resource officers (SROs) build a pipeline from schools to the brutally violent and discriminatory criminal legal system and disproportionately target Black students and other students of color. At March For Our Lives, we have found that armed police officers should not be assigned to monitor schools, and schools should not welcome individuals armed with weapons of war and violence under any circumstances. Data shows that the presence of police officers in schools does not measurably increase school safety or
improve academic outcomes. Therefore, we support the robust increase of counselors and health professionals in schools so that students have a safer conflict resolution alternative. This legislation will provide the opportunity for schools to be a safe environment for learning and self-growth rather than incarceration and punishment for trivial mistakes.

As a volunteer with March For Our Lives and as a constituent, I believe this is so crucial, especially today. Students are returning to school amidst a pandemic. are facing the trauma of isolation in developmental years, economic hardship, and may have even lost a family member due to the pandemic making it evident that there is a dire need for an increase in counselors and access to mental health help.

The time to invest in care, and not criminalization is important now more than ever.
